EV Training Guide By Abbeysol What Are EVs? EV stands for Effort Values sometimes called EPs for Effort Points. EP is hardly used however. Just call them EVs :P EVs are essential for competitive battling. They can effect your Pokemon's stats GREATLY. EVs are points you gain after defeating a wild, or in-game trainer's Pokemon. Different Pokemon give out different EVs. For example, if you were to defeat something random like a Gengar in the wild, you would get 3 EVs in Special Attack. Or like, if you beat a Zubat in the wild you'd get 1 EV in Speed. See, the EVs given out by Pokemon depend on their most dominant stat, and how much they are evolved. For example, Happiny gives 1 HP EV, Chansey 2 EVs in HP, Blissey 3 EVs in HP. The max amount of EVs you can put into a single stat is 255 EVs. The total max amount you can put onto a Pokemon is 510. So you can max out only 2 stats. However, it is recommended that you only put in 252 EVs, because the last extra 3 EVs typically don't raise the stat any higher. How To EV Train. How you EV train is simple, just go and defeat the Pokemon that give out the Effort Values you want. Like, if you wanted to max out your Pokemon's Speed. You could go out and defeat 252 Zubat. Or if you wanted to max out Special Attack you can go in the Old Chateau and beat 252 Gastly. Speeding Up EV Training I know, 252 Zubat? That sounds crazy. Like, way too many Pokemon to beat. But there are things that can help you EV train faster. Like... Vitamins! Vitamins actually give out 10 EVs. You can put up to 10 Vitamins in one stat. But ONLY, if your Pokemon's EVs in that stat are under 100. It won't let you give anymore if it's over 90. Here's the list: HP Up = + 10 HP Protein = + 10 Attack Iron = + 10 Defense Calcium = + 10 Special Attack Zinc = + 10 Special Defense Carbos = + 10 Speed So defeating 252 Zubat turns into only 152. Still a lot, obviously. That's why there's the Power Items. The Power Items are available to exchange for Battle Points at the Battle Tower. Power Items give out 4 EVs no matter what. Even if you battle a Pokemon, let's say Gengar again, while holding the Power Anklet, you'll get 3 EVs in Sp.atk from the Gengar and because of the Power Item, you'll also get 4 EVs in Speed. You could also give it Power Lens and battle that Gengar again to make those 3 Sp.atk EVs into 7 Sp.atk EVs. In the process though, your Pokemon's speed will be cut in half. List: Power Weight = + 4 HP Power Bracer = + 4 Attack Power Belt = + 4 Defense Power Lens = + 4 Special Attack Power Band = + 4 Special Defense Power Anklet = + 4 Speed Macho Brace also helps EV training, doubling the amount of whatever EVs you gain. So that 3 points you got from Gengar turns into 6. Your Speed though, again is cut in half while holding this. I personally prefer the Power Items over the Macho Brace though. Especially when they're combined with Pokerus. About Pokerus Pokerus is this awesome disease that doubles the EVs you gain like the Macho Brace does, only without cutting your Speed, and without wasting an item slot. Pokerus, for me, is a must in EV training. Combining it with the Power Items will get you more points than anything else. Say you battle that Gengar, holding Power Lens, infected with Pokerus. You will get 14 EVs in Special Attack. Meaning it'll only take 18 of those to get 252. It works like this: Gengar (3 Sp.atk EVs) + Power Lens (4 Sp.atk EVs) = 7 Points and Pokerus doubles that. So that also means if you were infected with Pokerus while holding the Power Anklet, that Zubat's 1 EV turns into 10 EVs, and if you were to battle a Pokemon that gives out 2 EVs, (while holding a Power Item that gives out the same stat EV) you would get 12 points in that stat. Makes everything sooo much easier. How you get Pokerus is really, by luck. Like... The chances of actually getting Pokerus, is actually more unlikely than getting a Shiny Pokemon, and the chances of that are about 1 in 8,192. So most likely you'll never get Pokerus naturally. Most people have it traded over to them. I've been told Pokerus goes away after a day or so. (Thanks, Syaoran-Kun) So to be safe, make sure you always put your infected Pokemon in the PC before then, so it'll stay infected. The AFFECT, of Pokerus actually stays after it's cured, but if it is cured, it can no longer spread the disease to other Pokemon. If you ever get Pokerus naturally and if you go to the Pokemon Center, Nurse Joy will tell you your Pokemon have it/have had it. And when your Pokemon IS infected, it'll have a purple block on the screen with "pkRS" on it. When it's cured, that purple block turns into a smiley face. Switching & EXP.Share Your Pokemon can actually receive EVs even after being switched. And, Pokemon holding the EXP.Share will also receive EVs from battle. But, let's say your lead Pokemon is holding Macho Brace or something. Will the doubled EVs be passed to the Pokemon holding the EXP.Share? No, it wouldn't. And having a Pokemon lead, and switching to the Pokemon holding the EXP.Share will not double the EXP.Share's EVs either. EV Reducing berries EV reducing berries are the opposite of Vitamins. They reduce the Pokemon's EVs by 10, IF, it is under 100 EVs. If it is over 100 EVs, it will automatically go down to 100, so the total amount of berries needed to clear out a maxed stat completely is 11 berries. List: Pomeg Berry = -10 HP Kelpsy Berry = -10 Attack Qualot Berry = -10 Defense Hondew Berry = -10 Special Attack Grepa Berry = -10 Special Defense Tamato Berry = -10 Speed Other Things Well, just some tips... But when you're done maxing out your Pokemon's EVs completely, (510 EVs) you could go see the woman in that market in Sunnyshore City. She'll tell you if the lead Pokemon in your party has maxed out its EVs or not. If your Pokemon's EVs are maxed, she'll give it an Effort Ribbon. When EV Training you could also use the Counter App to help you keep track of how many Pokemon you defeat if you're a little distracted or can't remember how much PP you started out with. Also, this is a question asked by Tadashi, which, I should've added this before because I used to be confused by this also, but... When you EV train, you can max out your Pokemon's EVs at ANY level under 100. You need to be able to gain EXP Points, so you can't EV Pokemon already at level 100. You don't need to level up or anything to get the game to understand that you've maxed out all your EVs, see the maxed EVs won't really show until you're level 100, but they're still there, you just can't see them fully. POKEMON LIST Here are some Serebii links with the list of Pokemon and what EVs they give out. | HP | Atk | Def | Sp.Atk | Sp.Def | Speed | EVing Locations: HP (D/P) Cowgirl Shelly, Route 209 (5 Bidoof) | (Platinum) Shellos, Valley Windworks Attack Fish anywhere Gyarados/Seaking are common Defense Geodude/Hippopotas, Ruin Maniac's Cave Special Attack Gastly, Old Chateau Special Defense Surf anywhere Tentacool are common Speed Zubat, Mt.Coronet (Surf) If anyone wants to give out their favorite EVing locations, go right ahead. EVing Locations suggested: Special Attack Golduck, Resort Area (Surf) [Suggested by minished] If anyone has any questions, feel free to post also. Please lemme know if I missed anything too. My Favorite EV training spot is actually in Fire Red, on Knot Island ( One Island). Its on Kindle Road and you battle the two karate guys, smashing into each other, next to the springs. They have a Machop and Machoke, before you beat the E4, and Machoke and Machoke/Machamp after the E4. I trained my Scyther there, and got +7, when i also fought other things like Starmies,Psyducks,Raticates, Etc. I Know that NOW +7 is bad, but, back then, it was decent/good. Also, i dont EV train in DPPT/HG SS because the battle scene is 2 long.. ;] Again, Excellent work. Edited by Neon_, Jan 31 2010, 02:52 PM.

"Pokemon holding the EXP.Share will receive HALF the NORMAL EVs from the Pokemon that battled" Pokemon holding the EXP.Share will receive all EVs from the Pokemon they battle. They only get half the exp from the battle. I have done this myself with lvl 1 Pokemon who obviously cant fight by themselves at that lvl and got the Effort Ribbon after I was done EV training it. You can also Google around to make sure. Also a good location to to EV train speed in Platinum is fighting Raticate and Fearow on Route 225 they both give 2 Speed EVs. You should also include how many EVs the Pokemon gives next to it's location that way people don't need to scroll down lists looking for the EV training Pokemon mentioned. |

Yeah, I figured that out myself later on as well. Thank you. Ant was wrong P: Either that or he lied. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter, lol. No offense to Ant if he's still around. |
